A School and Home Collaboration: A Pathway to Support the Behavioral, Social, and Emotional Needs of Student

Presenters: Chris Huzinec and Daniella Maglione Bashner

This 90-minute webinar will discuss home/school collaboration for distance and blended learning models of promoting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and supporting students’ behavioral needs.

Researchers (Kuhfeld & Tarasawa, 2020) have suggested that there will be a significant regression in student learning that will be reflected both in academics and social, emotional, and behavioral skills. Through the collaboration between home and school, teachers, caregivers, and students can work together to increase the range and effectiveness of interventions and strategies designed to support behavioral, social, and emotional development and promote student wellbeing.

This 90-minute webinar will discuss home/school collaboration for distance and blended learning models of promoting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and supporting students’ behavioral needs.

Participants will be part of a discussion on:

  • The general procedures which need to be established
  • The learning environment
  • Logistics: Schedule, dates, times, session lengths, and platform
  • Using the “buddy system” or teaming up between Caregiver/Student dyads (using the virtual platform to have “homework teams”)
  • Scope
  • Establish expectations
  • Identify resources
  • Anticipate and discuss concerns and challenges
  • Set up supports (identify team experts)
  • Establish check-in points so that evaluations and adjustments can be made.

CASEL SEL Competencies

Next, we will provide a user case of how these procedures and processes can be used in SEL and the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). We will describe how the SEL skills we need now relate to each CASEL SEL competency.

We will then address how the instructional process and associated resources and activities in the SSIS SEL Classwide Intervention Program can be used to teach SEL skills like “Pay attention to your work” and “Expressing your feelings”.

PBIS Support

The webinar will also provide an overview of PBIS that addresses supporting students within a behavioral, mental health, and trauma-informed lens. It will discuss how fundamentals of PBIS such as setting up behavioral expectations and applying reinforcement and acknowledgement can be used within a Home and School collaboration.

Finally, we will focus on identifying interventions, strategies, and resources that can be used through an aligned effort between teachers, parents and caregivers. "
