This 6-hour workshop will cover how to observe and interpret children's behavior and how to use the observations to identify indicators related to children's development. Through activities and reflections, participants will learn and practice how to collect and document evidence, interpret the evidence, and utilize the information to take action. Participants will also be guided through case studies to apply their learning. Price includes up to 40 people per session.

Audience: This session is targeted for new users who are implementing The Work Sampling System in their early childhood program or school.

Course description: This 6-hour workshop will cover how to observe and interpret children's behavior and how to use the observations to identify indicators related to children's development. Through activities and reflections, participants will learn and practice how to collect and document evidence, interpret the evidence, and utilize the information to take action. Participants will also be guided through case studies to apply their learning.

Learning objectives: After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Use the Developmental Guidelines to describe developmentally appropriate endof-yearexpectations in the Work Sampling domains
  • Describe examples of children’s behaviors that provide information about specific expectations
  • Identify performance indicators in each of the selected domains that provide information about a child’s skills, knowledge, and behavior
  • Describe how to document observations of children as they perform routine activities in their natural environment
  • Link observational data to developmental expectations
  • Summarize the gathered evidence by documenting the child’s strengths and needs
