Five children's movies every adult will also enjoy
“Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.” Movies have a magical way of bringing people together. Whether you’re five or 75, there’s a good chance a movie exists for every audience member to enjoy. That’s why we’re sharing a short list of “children’s movies” that can be shared with “kids” of all ages.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
This animated adventure follows the story of Brooklyn-based teen Miles Morales after he’s bitten by a radioactive spider. He quickly learns he isn’t the only “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man", and different versions of Spider-Man need to join forces to fight their collective nemesis, Kingpin. In addition to the story, stunning computer-animated visuals are paired with a star-studded soundtrack. This Academy award-winning film proves it’s perfect for people of all ages.
Have you ever wondered what happens when/if Peter Pan grows up? Us either, but Hook offers an exclusive look at the life that might have been! Hook tells the tale of an overworked, middle-aged lawyer named Peter Banning. After Peter's children are abducted by Captain Hook, Peter is forced to return to his magical roots as Peter Pan to save them. This film offers a unique recounting of this timeless rivalry for children. For adults, this movie offers a wonderful reminder “to live would be an awfully big adventure.”
Although Elf is technically considered a Christmas movie, this film is the definition of “family fun for everyone”. A human child is adopted and raised by Santa’s elves at the North Pole. They lovingly name him Buddy. As he enters adulthood, Buddy feels like he just doesn’t fit in. That’s when he discovers who his biological father is and where he can find him. Buddy also learns his dad has earned a spot on Santa’s naughty list. Buddy then travels to New York City in hopes of redemption for both of them. With winks and nods to grown-up life throughout the film, Elf is sure to get any adult in the holiday spirit.
Written and produced by Jerry Seinfeld, this animated feature film offers a unique perspective on life inside and outside the hive through the eyes of Barry B. Benson. Barry is distraught to learn how monotonous the life of a worker bee actually is inside the hive. So naturally, Barry ventures outside the hive. He makes a few friends along the way, but Barry’s mission soon evolves to help preserve the natural pollination process. Originally intended for children, this “hit comedy” from DreamWorks has gained notoriety in the meme/blogging communities tumblr and reddit. A movie for kids and parents? You better bee-lieve it.
Whether you gravitate to the classic 1976 version or the more modern version from 2003, Freaky Friday shares the same story of a teenage girl who swaps bodies with no other than her mother. Mother and daughter are forced to masquerade as each other until they can find a solution and switch back to their original bodies. Of course, they learn a bit about themselves and each other. A little nostalgia for the generations goes a long way.

Anti-New Year’s resolutions
The phrase, “Out with the old, in with the new” has never been more applicable during the New Year than in 2021. We’re ready for a fresh start, but we’re ready to take it easy at the same time (It’s been a long year already). Here are some of the most common New Year’s Resolutions with a more relaxed approach:
Meet new people → Reconnect with loved ones
Communication is key as everyone learns to navigate the “new normal”. Meeting new people can be tough to do virtually, and can be a generally nerve-wracking experience. So why not reconnect with existing friends and family members? If you’re thinking about them, we’re sure they’d love to hear from you!
Pick up a new skill or hobby → Become a master at your craft and share the love:
The idea of learning something new can feel intimidating. So why not share your love or knowledge of a topic or activity? From how to edit a YouTube video to how to remove coffee stains from vehicle upholstery, everyone can teach a masterclass about something. How can you become a resource to others interested in your area of expertise?
Do more → Do less (and get some rest)
We’re constantly on the go, moving at the speed of light, practicing a never-ending balancing act. While we know you are capable of managing more, have you considered slowing things down? Consider mastering the art of the “power nap” or simply setting up a sleep schedule for yourself. There’s never a bad day to get a good night’s rest.
Get organized → Declutter where/when you can:
Spring cleaning is a common method, but not always effective for keeping disarray at bay. Small changes can make and maintain the biggest impact all year long. Try setting aside 5–10 minutes each day to clear a space or donate a few items. Your home will thank you.
Exercise and/or lose weight → Be more active:
Move as often and in a way that feels good for your brain and body. You are more than a number on a scale and health looks different for everyone. You are someone else’s goals. Remember that.
All about ASMR
Have you ever experienced goosebumps while listening to a song for the first time? Did your first kiss make you physically feel like sparks were flying? If so, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered ASMR. If you experience ASMR, you’re familiar with the euphoric feeling associated with repetitive tapping, hair brushing, or even chewing. If you do not experience ASMR, keep reading to learn more about ASMR and what it means for R&R (Rest & Relaxation).
As a whole, ASMR is a fairly new concept. The term “ASMR” was coined in 2010 by a woman on Facebook who created a group to see if other Facebook users experienced this phenomenon. “ASMR” stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response”. The physical reaction is characterized by a warm, tingling sensation that begins at the scalp and travels down the neck and spine. ASMR is predominantly considered calming or relaxing, which is why many people watch ASMR-themed videos before bedtime.
People experience ASMR in different ways from a variety of “triggers”. ASMR triggers may be audible, visible, or rely on physical touch. Audible triggers feature sounds like whispering, crinkling, or typing. Visible triggers include actions like hand movements, color swatches, and light patterns. Physical triggers are a result of scratching, brushing, or massaging. Everyone experiences ASMR differently, which may include a combination of the triggers listed above and more.
How can ASMR benefit my health?
A study conducted at Dartmouth College examined brain activity for those affected by ASMR triggers. Scientists noticed increased activity in the medial prefrontal cortex among other parts of the brain associated with the reward system and emotional reactions. Experts suggest ASMR brain activity mimics responses similar to positive social interactions or bonding.
Additionally, ASMR has the ability to guide listeners/viewers into a state of relaxation which actually lowers the heart rate. As a result, ASMR offers valuable mental and physical health benefits like pain relief, less stress, and improved moods. So, the experience is at least worth considering for multiple reasons.

All the details on the digital detox
As technology advances to provide new solutions, it’s no surprise that new electronics also create new problems. Studies about how the Internet, content consumption, and electronic usage affect the body and mind are ongoing. At least, we know it’s possible to strike a balance between life and activities online, and meaningful interactions and engagement offline. Experts suggest completing a “digital detox” as an effective first step in finding that balance.
A “digital detox” refers to a period of time during which a person actively refrains from electronic use to regain focus on offline endeavors and interactions. This type of cleanse is valuable for decreasing stress and anxiety while increasing mindfulness and connectedness. This temporary purge can produce positive effects on the mind, body, and spirit.
It’s important to understand the side effects of Internet and electronic addiction. Prolonged exposure to screens (a.k.a. screen time) is proven to interrupt the natural sleep cycle, increase the risk for obesity, and deteriorate mental health. Other effects include an increased risk of developing depression, anxiety, and attention disorders like ADD and ADHD, especially in young people. Neuroimaging research shows excessive screen time and Internet use can literally damage the brain in terms of emotional processing, executive attention, decision making, and cognitive control. If that’s not bad enough, United Healthcare found American adults are spending an average of 13 hours per day on a screen since the pandemic began in early 2020.
How to prepare for a digital detox in seven steps
- Get inspired!
- Plan a variety of fun offline activities to keep you motivated!
- Determine a reasonable length of time to complete your cleanse from technology.
- Give yourself grace and understand some screens will be unavoidable, such as work or distancing learning.
- Set realistic boundaries and consider partnering with a buddy who will support your quest for quality time.
- Get outside to enjoy the great outdoors or get into a good book!
- Ask yourself questions about your electronic habits and take notes throughout your “digital detox” to see how you’ve grown (and for future reference).
Now that you’re armed with information, do you have what it takes? Test your limits and separate yourself from your screens with these easy-to-follow guides: The 7-Day Digital Detox Challenge and The 30-Day Digital Detox Challenge.

Products with a purpose: Part I
Giving back in any capacity is so important these days. So why not treat yourself to something special and give back to the community with the same purchase? Take a look below to learn about a few companies close to our hearts.
According to their website, Bombas exists to help support the population experiencing homelessness in the United States. For every product purchased, Bombas will donate a pair of socks to someone in need. This company may sound familiar following their presentation on ABC’s “Shark Tank” in 2014. Since then, Bombas has donated over 40 million clothing items with over 3,000 giving partners in all 50 states. Bombas truly brings a new meaning to the phrase, “Look good, feel good”.

These funds are dedicated to innovative and impactful programs to help solve animal welfare issues. Their coffee keeps volunteers fueled while proceeds fund valuable resources for the animals. Grounds & Hounds has donated over 2.1 million shelter meals and nearly 3,000 vaccinations for furry friends across the nation. If that’s not paw-sitively awesome, we don’t know what is!
Making self-care resources, reminders, and experiences more accessible is what Self Care is for Everyone is all about. Five must-try Starbucks secret menu items
If you enjoy drinking coffee, there’s a very good chance you’ve visited a Starbucks once or twice. Avid visitors of the coffee chain will be more familiar with their “secret menu items”. No, you don’t need to say a phrase or password. In fact, most baristas would actually prefer if you didn’t, but you will need to know the key ingredients in these specially crafted beverages. Created by fans for their fellow Starbucks fans, take a look at a few of the recipes behind some of these sweet treats.
Please note: All recipes below are intended for Starbucks’ “grande” or medium-sized beverages. You may need to adjust the number or amount of flavor mix-ins and toppings depending on your beverage size/order.
Samoa/Caramel Delight Frappuccino
Girl Scout Cookie season is right around the corner and we could not be more excited! Until then, we recommend satisfying that sweet tooth with the Samoa/Caramel Delight Frappuccino. Order a mocha Frappuccino with 1–2 pumps of toasted coconut syrup and 1–2 pumps of caramel syrup. Ask for whipped cream with mocha and caramel syrup drizzled on top. So… Who should we contact to receive our badge for “Most Adventurous Taste Buds”?
It was only a matter of time before the “Baby Yoda” craze “Forced” its way into Starbucks. Go get your Grogu fix by ordering a matcha green tea frappuccino with caramel drizzle inside the cup. Then ask for whipped cream, caramel syrup and caramel ribbon crunchies on top. This is the way.
There’s nothing quite like spending a sunny summer day at a carnival among the rides and games. We understand if you’re missing and reminiscing about a day at the fair, which is why we love the Cotton Candy Frappuccino. Simply order a vanilla bean Frappuccino with 1–2 pumps of raspberry syrup (Whipped cream is optional), and you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world — or Ferris wheel.
In April 2015, Oprah partnered with Teavana to create a special beverage that was an official offering on the Starbucks menu for a limited time. With every purchase of the Oprah Cinnamon Chai Latte, Starbucks donated 25¢ to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. If you’re feeling inspired, we recommend a slightly more modern, spicier, and caffeinated version of this feel-good drink, the “Dirty Oprah Chai”. Simply ask for a cinnamon chai latte with an extra shot of espresso and cinnamon sprinkled on top. Now you’re ready for anything, just like Oprah.
In 2021, our immune systems are working overtime these days. While a beverage from Starbucks cannot singlehandedly cure a cold or the flu, it sure can ease symptoms and comfort sippers. Once a secret menu item, the “Medicine Ball” gained so much popularity, Starbucks added the drink to its full menu! Order a honey citrus mint tea today for a bit of wellness both inside and out.

Meet five Girl Scout cookies that brought us joy this season
There is something undeniable about the crunch of the classically crispy Girl Scout Cookie, isn’t there? Catering to chocolate lovers and fruit fans alike, the full assortment of flavors continues to grow each year. In addition to tasting delightfully delicious, these sweet treats continue to teach young girls valuable life lessons. Feel-good foods that taste and do good are our kind of cookies. Keep reading to reminisce with our review of this season’s Girl Scout Cookies selection.
Some things never go out of style, including the seasonal favorite flavor of lemon; in recent years, the Girl Scout Cookies line-up has almost assuredly featured an option full of lemon-y goodness. The new Lemon-Ups cookies are now available through Girl Scouts as of last year (2020). This cookie features the crispy shortbread we all know and love with a tangy twist of lemon flavor and lemon icing along one side. Just to be clear: This cookie is not a carbon copy of the ever-popular Lemonade cookie. The hint of lemon in the shortbread cookie packs quite the punch. With positive messages imprinted on every cookie, we cannot get enough of this springtime staple.
What’s in a name? Let us clear up any confusion: The Girl Scouts’ infamous Samoas and Caramel deLites are the same thing yet different. Both cookies feature a crispy, vanilla-based cookie that’s coated in caramel, and sprinkled with toasted coconut flakes, then drizzled with chocolate stripes. These sweets are simply manufactured at separate facilities by different bakeries. Although a long-standing debate between the two versions exists, one thing is certain: This cookie is always delicious. One bite of the crisp and chewy confection explains why this cookie is the second most popular item in terms of sales each year. No matter what you call them, we’re calling this one a must-eat from the yearly Girl Scouts menu.
Much like Samoas and Caramel deLites, Girl Scouts also offer a few variations (based on location) of their most well-loved cookie, Thin Mints. At their heart, Thin Mints are mint and/or chocolate-flavored wafer cookies coated with a layer of chocolate. The type of mint and how mint is incorporated into the recipe help differentiate these two distinctly flavored cookies. One bakery mixes peppermint oil into in the batter of the chocolate wafers while the other bakery infuses mint into the fudgy chocolate coating. Regardless of which version you receive, these “grasshopper” inspired snacks are undeniable. Our best advice? Store them in the freezer for an extra refreshing dessert or midday treat!
No Girl Scouts season would be complete without a new limited-time only flavor offering; in 2021, the Girl Scouts released the Toast-Yay! flavor in select markets. This seasonal cookie is infused with cinnamon and maple flavors and dipped in icing. Inspired by French toast, these treats are even shaped like slices of bread! Each cookie is stamped with the traditional Girl Scout’s trefoil emblem. Sweet yet balanced, these goodies pair well with black coffee, or make it matcha if you prefer tea! Don’t worry, we won’t tell if you replace your morning breakfast with a few of these!
So, the story goes, the Girl Scouts of America were responsible for publishing the original recipe for the traditional s’mores snack in their guidebook in 1927. One hundred years later in 2017, the Girls Scouts released two modern-day creative cookie variations of the timeless treat. Lovingly known as “Girl Scouts S’mores”, one version featured graham sandwich cookies paired with creamy chocolate and marshmallow filling. The other style featured a graham cookie coated with a thin layer of marshmallow and a thick chocolate coating; this type cookie was retired at the end of the cookie-selling season. A delicious callback to the beginning, this sweet sandwich is worth a taste test. We recommend munching on this one with milk.

Five Instagram pets worthy of your follow
If only all animals had opposable thumbs so they could open their own social media accounts... Oh wait, their humans will do that for them. Pets with influence are a common occurrence in the digital age. So we gathered a group of Instagram animals with all the personality and platforms to boot. Take a look below to learn more about some of the world’s most famous furry friends.
The power of reddit was real long before r/WallStreetBets went viral in January 2021. Believe it or not, a cat went above and beyond on the platform in August 2012. Venus is a cat whose face is half black and half red tabby. Her eyes are also two different colors, the left eye is green while the right eye is blue. As of today, Venus boasts 2 million Instagram followers, and previous appearances on The Today Show and Fox & Friends. With “the look” and personality to match it, Venus is truly the best of both worlds.
Have you ever met a dog worthy of celebrity status? Let us introduce you to Doug the Pug, a dog with over 18 million followers across social platforms. Doug won the title of Animal Star from the People’s Choice Awards in 2019. He appeared in the Netflix Original “Stranger Things” (among other music videos and events). The mayor of Nashville, TN even declared May 20th as “Doug the Pug Day”. What can we say? Doug didn’t choose the pug life, the pug life chose him.
Juniper is a North American Red Fox, adopted from a kit of ranched foxes (Animals descended from use in the fur trade), with over 3 million Instagram followers and a full-time personal assistant. Owner, Jessica Coker, originally opened Juniper’s Instagram account to educate others about raising domesticated foxes - Achievements, challenges, and all. Since then, Juniper’s platform has allowed Coker to grow an animal sanctuary for puppies and possums alike. There are no tall tails here, just a growing fur family having fun.
Nearly 700,000 followers, two original children’s books, and a charitable cause later, Prissy and Pop are among the most popular pigs on Instagram. Their owner, Melissa Nicholson, fell in love with pigs while visiting a pig farm during college. Her love only grew from there; she left her schoolteacher life behind in 2016 and started a non-profit organization called Prissy and Pop’s Helping Hooves. No snout about it, Prissy and Pop are quite the “pig” deal.
What do Joe Jonas, Forbes, and the Shorty Awards have common? All have featured Lionel the Hedgehog on their front pages! Adopted in April 2015, Lionel’s owner, Anna Mathias, has grown his Instagram account to 150,000 followers (and added a sibling, Lilo, to the mix). Lionel even has his own booking agent through The Dog Agency, a talent group that specializes in social media animals. Needless to say, this little “cactus with legs” is always looking sharp and spreading joy. We’re hedge over heels for him, aren’t you?
