Beyond Social Skills: Rethinking Pragmatic Language as Communication Access Webinar (Register Now)

Presenter(s): Nathalie Lebrun, M.A., CCC-SLP (presenter), Jessi Zechman (host)

Traditional pragmatic language intervention often emphasizes expected social behaviors, conversational conventions, perspective-taking, and neurotypical verbal and nonverbal cues, placing responsibility for communication success on the autistic person. This session introduces a neurodiversity-affirming framework that views pragmatics through the lens of communication access. Attendees will explore how individuals, communication partners, and environments shape outcomes and learn to identify interactional mismatches and determine whether support should target individual skills, partner practices, environmental barriers, or a combination of all three.
