The growing challenge in mental health care
Bernie's story reflects a reality many behavioral health providers face today. "As our business grew, especially on the EAP (Employee Assistance Program) side, what we noticed was not only was the business growing, but the need, the demand for mental health services was growing," he explains. "And the amount of providers to provide that service in the country was really, actually across the world, but especially in this country, was diminishing."
This supply and demand imbalance created a perfect storm. Bernie's team found themselves providing longer-term care than typical for EAPs, stretching their counselors thin while trying to serve more clients who desperately needed help.
Why assessment matters more than ever
The solution wasn't just about working harder—it was about working smarter. Bernie recognized that better assessment tools could transform how his practice operated on multiple levels. "We wanted to be more efficient and do a better job of assessing," he notes. "CAT-MH® was a great tool for assessment, because it allowed potential clients to gather information on the tool and put it into our client files and our counselor could actually see it before they actually came in or during the first couple of sessions."
But the benefits extended far beyond initial efficiency. The comprehensive assessment data created what Bernie calls "greater systems of accountability"—for both individual clinicians and the organization as a whole.

"We were able to give them input and we were also able to determine with them what they were good at and what they weren't so good at. So we could gear potential clients to the right people."

For EAP providers, demonstrating value to corporate clients can be challenging. How do you show the impact of confidential mental health services? Bernie found that CAT-MH®'s aggregate reporting capabilities provided the answer. "We were able to let them know what people were presenting with, which was something we'd always been able to do. But also, how they were doing, what they were doing in the course of treatment, and what happened with it."
Corporate partners could finally see concrete outcomes: "They didn't know that 12% of the folks that were depressed came in and 18% of that 12% dropped out. And another 80% got better."
The life-saving moment
Perhaps the most powerful example of CAT-MH®'s impact came during an after-hours emergency. Bernie recalls: "We actually had a situation, after hours. It was late night where somebody called in, and they took the CAT-MH®, and they scored pretty high on the severity scale in terms of suicidality. So that message got to our on-call counselor, who then reached out to the person and was able to calm the person down and get them into someplace where they could get the help."
Near-instant access to the results meant that instead of hoping someone in crisis would have the wherewithal to ask for help, the system proactively identified the risk and connected them with support. "Had that not happened, we would have been at the mercy of whether or not that person had enough wherewithal to give us a call so that we could get them the help they need."
Efficiency without sacrificing quality
One of Bernie's initial concerns was that comprehensive assessment would create barriers for clients already hesitant to seek help. However, the ability to customize the assessment battery to focus on the most relevant domains solved this problem. The result was remarkable efficiency: "The validity and the accuracy of this was amazing because when we would sit down with our clients and obviously talk to them about the results... it was really amazing how spot on the results were."
Looking forward: A tool for the future
Bernie sees CAT-MH® as particularly valuable given current trends in behavioral health care. "In this current behavioral health care marketplace or world, there is an uneven supply and demand issue. And I think that's only going to get worse."
His solution-focused perspective offers hope: "The way we can at least combat that before we flood the market with more providers is to really do a better job in the assessment phase. And then, since we're going to get an influx of younger providers. I think this is a way to bring them up to speed quicker and to focus more on the education, the supervision, and the quality control."

What makes Bernie's story so compelling isn't just the operational improvements or cost savings—it's the human impact. Every more accurate assessment, every better client-clinician match, every early intervention represents someone getting the help they need when they need it most.
As Bernie puts it: "There's this window that opens when somebody's in pain and it's open a very little bit for a very short period of time. And if we do something that's going to make it more difficult for them, it'll close quickly and they won't get the help they need."
