Pearson’s PRoPL Approved as Alternative Assessment to the Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA)

The Virginia Department of Education has approved the Pearson Review of Progress and Learning (PRoPL) as an Alternative Assessment to the Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) for grades 3-8 in mathematics and reading.
PRoPL is a short, standards‑based, computer adaptive interim assessment that gives teachers clear, immediate insight into what students know so they can target instruction, respond to needs sooner, and make the most of classroom time.
The assessments are delivered on TestNav, the same platform used for Virginia’s statewide assessments, and incorporate summative‑quality items that reflect the rigor and item-type variety of state academic standards.
Per legislation passed by the 2024 General Assembly (SB 345 and HB 1076), Virginia school divisions may use PRoPL this year and through November 2030 in place of the VGA in the fall, winter, and spring, in advance of year-end testing. Required end‑of‑year Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments for grades 3–8 remain in place.

In Virginia, PRoPL is available to assess reading and math for grades 3-8. Administered in approximately 35 minutes per subject, these quick interim assessments offer dynamic, visual, real-time results to help educators understand progress toward end‑of‑year expectations and support more personalized instruction throughout the year.
