Effective Early Numeracy Assessment Measures

Because numeracy skills are so imperative to learn in the first few years of a child’s schooling, early assessment is pivotal in grades K-1. We know that acquiring a sense of numbers and numeracy skills is essential to a child’s later understanding and performance in mathematics and critical thinking. But how do we go about accurately assessing such early skills?

Throughout the past year, new requirements from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSERS) have been placed on your school's Individualized Education Programs (IEP). IEP goals must align with grade-level content standards for all children with disabilities - helping make certain that students with learning differences are prepared for college and career.1

Students have diverse and varying learning needs, and it’s the implementation of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS), which includes the response to intervention (RTI) process, that helps educators identify struggling students early and provide the appropriate level of support.

It may seem logical to welcome students to a new school year and screen upon arrival. This will give you all of the data you need to identify at-risk students and plan interventions per student, right?  

There is no denying that the education realm is complicated. Large class sizes, varied student needs, and a push to meet – if not exceed – state standards and report high, year-end test results demands an effective method that ensures no student slips through the cracks.
