Edwin I. Megargee was born in New Jersey in 1937. After graduating magna cum laude from Amherst College with a bachelor's degree in psychology, he enrolled in the graduate psychology program at the University of California at Berkeley, famous for its emphasis on research and personality assessment.
While pursuing his doctorate, Megargee worked as a clinical psychologist at a local county probation department. Working with juveniles, he developed an interest in the nature of aggression and violence and became convinced that prevailing theories describing the causes of aggressive behavior in humans were far too simplistic. His subsequent theory of "the over-controlled violent offender" flew in the face of conventional psychological approaches to understanding aggressive behavior.
Megargee taught at the University of Texas At Austin and has been at Florida State University, since 1967. For 17 years he was involved with the Federal Correction Institution (FCI) as a researcher and consultant. In 1970, he produced one of the most comprehensive bodies of knowledge ever derived from a study of criminal offenders. With the help of the FBI, Megargee and one of his post-doctoral students, Joyce Carbonell, studied ex-convicts for up to a decade. This was one of the most detailed longitudinal studies of violent, aggressive behavior ever conducted.
An early product of the FCI research was the Megargee-Bohn offender classification system, which quickly set a new standard for psychological classification in correctional institutions (1977). The system was based on the MMPI® (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory®) test, one of the more widely used methods for classifying inmates in the federal, state, and county penal systems.
Megargee has written more than 100 books, chapters, and journal articles on correctional assessment and has received numerous honors including Distinguished Achievement in Correctional Psychology from the American Association of Correctional Psychologists, Significant Research on the MMPI from the University of Minnesota Department of Psychology, and the Annual Bernard P. Harrison Award of Merit for lifetime achievement in promoting correctional health care presented by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
