Alternate Assessments

Alternate assessments are created to measure the achievement of students who are unable to participate in the regular assessment. In general, these students include those with significant cognitive disabilities, known as the 1% population, and those whose disabilities prevent them from achieving grade-level achievement, known as the 2% population.

States can use a variety of approaches in the design of alternate assessments. These include portfolio, performance, and checklist.
