Noted Expert on Violence and Aggression Addresses Corrections Professionals
Edwin I. Megargee, PhD, CCHP, Presents Megargee Offender Classification System
August 28, 2003, MINNEAPOLIS—Edwin (Ned) I. Megargee, PhD, CCHP, has been recognized as a pioneer in the modern psychological investigation of violent, aggressive behavior. Megargee’s more than 40 years of research has led to the creation of a classification system to help criminal justice and corrections systems to better assess the needs and manage the treatment of inmates.
Recognizing that increasingly high numbers of criminal offenders are mentally ill, criminal justice and corrections officials are under enormous pressure to quickly classify, better manage, and efficiently rehabilitate adult offenders.
Megargee’s empirically-derived Megargee Offender Classification System has been reported to effectively classify 90% to 95% of the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2) profiles encountered in most probation, parole and correctional settings. One federal institution used the system as a guide to housing placements, resulting in a 46% reduction in serious violence.
Megargee’s classification system is the basis for his MMPI-2 Criminal Justice and Correctional Report, published by the University of Minnesota and available from Pearson Assessments. Megargee’s report features offender to offender comparisons with ratings on nine relevant behavioral dimensions and problem areas, descriptions of the likely behaviors of ten types of offenders, and strategies for managing each type. The report also includes critical items related to self-injury and suicide. Specifically, the report helps identify offenders who:
- May suffer from thought disorders, serious depression, and alcohol and substance abuse and may need mental health treatment
- Are most likely to respond most positively to academic and vocational programming
- Are likely to be hostile, predatory, bullied or victimized
This information is useful to help guide institutional placement and management.
Megargee will be presenting at the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, sponsored by the National Conference on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) in Austin, Texas on Tuesday, October 7. He will instruct psychologists on the use and interpretation of the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2) test with criminal offenders, and use of the Megargee Offender Classification system.
Committed to improving the quality of healthcare in U.S. jails, prisons and juvenile facilities, the NCCHC serves as a resource to correctional health care systems through a wide range of services and programs.
