Discontinuation of the Original MMPI® Assessment

August 15, 1998, MINNEAPOLIS—The University of Minnesota Press and NCS will discontinue publication and distribution of the original MMPI instrument on September 1, 1999. As of this date, test materials and reports will no longer be available through NCS, the test’s distributor. The University will continue to defend the original MMPI against unauthorized use. After September 1, 1999 the only authorized versions of the MMPI will be the MMPI-2™ and the MMPI-A™.

The original MMPI is being discontinued for the following reasons:

  1. Discontinuation of the original MMPI is consonant with the standards of the test publishing industry and the American Psychological Association:

A test should be amended or revised when new research data, significant changes in the domain, represented, or new conditions of test use and interpretation make the test inappropriate for its intended use. An apparently old test that remains useful need not be withdrawn or revised simply because of the passage of time. But it is the responsibility of the test publishers to monitor changing conditions and to amend, revise, or withdraw the test as indicated. (Standards for Psychological Tests, Standard 3.18, 1985).

  2. At this point, the original MMPI must be considered out of date. The MMPI-2, published in 1989, and the MMPI-A, published in 1992, have largely supplanted the original MMPI in clinical and in research use. These contemporary instruments offer more appropriate item pools, more contemporary and representative norms, and more useful scoring and interpretive resources.

  3. The simultaneous availability of the original and revised forms of the MMPI has become a source of confusion for test users, particularly in forensic applications. The test publisher, in consultation with its advisors, has determined that given the widespread use of the revised instruments in clinical practice and the substantial and steadily growing body of empirical instruments, the users of the tests, and the field of psychological assessment that publication of the original MMPI be discontinued.

Current users of the original MMPI who need to obtain information on how to begin using the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A are invited to contact NCS at 1-800-627-7271. NCS will continue to provide technical and product support for the original MMPI through September 1, 1999 and will provide easy, affordable methods to switch from the original MMPI to the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A.
