NCS Announces Newest Addition to Millon Clinical Inventories
The MBMD (Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic) Assessment
July 28, 2000, MINNEAPOLIS—The MBMD (Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic) assessment, a new psychological instrument designed for use with medical patients will be released by NCS this fall. Authored by Theodore Millon, PhD, DSc; Michael Antoni, PhD; and colleagues, the MBMD assessment was developed to help increase medical treatment effectiveness, reduce medical utilization and overall costs of medical care. The test helps identify the psychosocial assets and liabilities that may support or interfere with the patient's course of medical treatment.
According to Antoni, the developers of the MBMD test sought to create an inventory that could reduce the number of different assessments needed with medical patients, and be applicable to a wider range of patients. The research sample base includes more than 700 patients of various diverse populations in cancer centers, pain clinics, diabetes research centers, organ transplant units, cardiology behavioral health centers, neuro-rehabilitation centers, and HIV/AIDS clinical trials.
The MBMD test also covers more ground than its predecessor, the MBHI™ assessment, Antoni continues. The Coping Styles are more in line with DSM-IV® Axis II, but use labels that medical professionals understand. New Domains include Psychiatric Indications, Stress Moderators and Treatment Prognostics. A Management Guide helps identify the patient's most significant adjustment issues as well as the need for psychological referral or medication.
The MBMD test's narrative report specifies the patient's potential assets and liabilities clearly and thoroughly, according to Antoni. The report also includes a one-page tear-off Healthcare Provider Summary designed explicitly for physicians and nurses.
Millon is Founding Editor of the Journal of Personality Disorders and past President of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders. He has had full professorial appointments at Harvard Medical School and the University of Miami and is currently Dean of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology in Miami. As the author of the Millon Clinical Inventories, has also written or edited more than 20 books on personality and has contributed more than 200 chapters and articles to numerous other books and journals in the field.
Antoni is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Miami. He is Director of the Center for Psycho-Oncology Research in Miami. He has conducted NIH-funded behavioral medicine/health psychology research in the areas of behavioral management of chronic diseases and psychoneuroimmunology for the past 15 years.
