Assessment of Patients with Sleep Disorders
More than 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Sleep disorders can lead to reduced quality of life, cause personal health problems and, in some cases, be life-threatening. In addition, untreated sleep problems can endanger public safety by contributing to traffic and industrial accidents.
Practitioners in the field of sleep medicine have discovered that factors such as lifestyle choices, environmental influences, and psychological issues can play a role in some sleep disorders.
We offer psychosocial tests to help clinicians evaluate patients suffering from sleep problems. Our assessments can be particularly helpful in the area of behavioral sleep medicine (BSM). Physicians, nurses and psychologists use our tests to help assess:
- Patient’s likely response and adherence to treatment
- Indicators of psychopathology
- Presence of depression, anxiety, or other factors that may indicate the need for referral to psychological treatment
- Biopsychosocial assets and liabilities such as sleep hygiene practices, negative health habits, coping styles, and life satisfaction issues
The data provided by these tests can help practitioners share valuable information across the healthcare team, facilitate communication with the patient and family, develop effective treatment plans, and measure treatment outcomes.
