Bariatric Assessment and Presurgical Evaluation
As obesity has increased in the general population, bariatric surgery has gained attention and popularity. Bariatric surgery, often referred to as weight loss surgery or stomach stapling, does not cure morbid obesity. Rather, the procedure provides patients with a tool that, when used correctly, may help keep weight under control.
Bariatric surgery, including presurgical preparation and post-surgical aftercare, can be truly transforming for a patient. In order to increase the likelihood of a successful post-surgical outcome, the patient must have the ability, resources, and motivation to adhere to a life-long commitment of self care and healthy choices.
We offer psychosocial assessments for clinicians to use for presurgical and follow-up evaluation of bariatric surgery candidates. Bariatric physicians, surgeons and psychologists use our validated and normed tests to help:
- Determine the patient's emotional presurgical readiness
- Assess for psychopathology
- Assess for presence of depression, anxiety, or other factors that may indicate need for referral for psychological treatment
- Assess the patient's psychosocial assets and liabilities and health practices, using the data to facilitate patient communication and education
- Learn how the patient is likely to react after surgery, using the data to facilitate communication with the medical team
- Track treatment outcomes
