Use this scale to help identify and diagnose autism. The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS) helps to identify and diagnose autism in individuals ages 3 through 22 years and to estimate the severity of the disorder. The entire scale can be completed in 5 to 10 minutes. Items are based on the definitions of autism adopted by the Autism Society of America and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—Fourth Edition (DSM–IV). The items are grouped into three core subtests, Stereotyped Behaviors, Communication, Social Interaction, and one optional subtest, Developmental Disturbances.
